Playtech, one of the biggest game software providers for PayPal casinos, betting websites, and other gambling operators in the UK, signed former UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) manager Richard Bayliss. This unlikely team-up happened earlier this week, following the recent UK gambling regulations discussions.

Richard’s new position will be in Playtech’s compliance team, and he will help them develop responsible gambling software.

Switching sides

Ian Ince, head of regulatory affairs at Playtech, said, “Everyone at Playtech is delighted to welcome Richard. With a wealth of experience with UKGC, his insight will be a major bonus as we strive to stay at the forefront of regulatory compliance developments. I’m certain he will be an invaluable addition to the team.”

But what are Richard’s thoughts after joining the ‘enemy’?

Well, he explained this transition like this, “After more than a decade assessing the regulatory impact of technological developments in the industry, I’m looking forward to seeing some of these developments first-hand in my new role. Playtech has a reputation as a major innovator in online gambling, and I’m very excited to be joining the team.”

Of course, we are not being serious about Richard betraying the UK Gambling Commission. However, it is interesting to see what he will be able to do at Playtech. Also, the timing of his move is particularly interesting.

The UKGC and other regulatory authorities have been coming down hard on the gambling companies, and rightfully so. Most recently, the UK’s Committee for Advertising Practices created new guidelines for gambling advertises.

So, it’s encouraging to see that a software developer is taking action to improve the current situation in online gambling.
